About

PekaSys develops technologies that are designed to achieve smarter, cleaner use of water and energy, displacing wasteful technologies through cost savings. In order to speed adoption and simplify installation and maintenance, PekaSys combines smart controls with conventional components.

‘PekaSys’ means ‘river system.’ A river is a natural system of water and energy that cleanses and revitalizes itself by simply flowing. This sums up the founding purpose of PekaSys – a company that promotes sustainable technologies that cleanse and revitalize the world by simply operating.

PekaSys is a member of the GoodCompany Group, a group of socially and environmentally responsible start-ups working to make Philadelphia, PA the hub of green products.

Founder's Bio

Joshua N. Meyer founded PekaSys with the goal of speeding the adoption of technologies that solve social and environmental problems in an economically smart way. The idea for PekaSys grew out of a 2005 project that Josh led called Latin America Technology Transfer, where his team used local materials to build hydroponic gardens on the roofs and walls of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and build a windmill in the Dominican Republic. During this project, Josh realized that the best solutions are those that combine innovation with locally available materials and components allowing innovations to gain traction more quickly, speeding adoption in the market.

Josh, a licensed Master Plumber, got his start in the business world when he was working towards his Masters in Environmental Engineering and his dad suffered a heart attack. This made Josh split his time between studies and helping to run the family plumbing company. Just like many of life’s surprises, this proved to be an invaluable experience, as it allowed Josh to apply what he was learning at the university with what was being done in the field. Josh realized the huge disparity between academic knowledge and actual field practices. While on the one hand he realized what was possible with modern technology, he had firsthand experience as to the obstacles standing in the way of implementing new technologies.

During this time, Josh discovered the Clear Rex, a German product capable of treating wastewater onsite similar to the process that cities use. Josh began working with the product to modify for the North American market. This involved a tireless pursuit of adaptations and simplifications to make the product easy for installers on this continent. This is the first of many products that Josh intends to bring to the market.
